Brief Description:

This an introductory course  to statistics which begins with descriptive statistics, collecting and summarizing data, graphing, averages, dispersion statistics, measures of relative standing. This course also introduces fundamentals of probability, addition rule, multiplication rule, complements, probability distributions of random variables, mean, variance and expected value, binomial random variable, poisson random variable. Normal probability distributions: standard normal, nonstandard normal, finding scores when given probabilities, central limit theorem, normal approximation to the binomial distribution.

Estimation and sample size (single parameter): mean, proportion, variance, and standard deviation. Hypothesis testing (single parameter): mean, p-value, t-test, proportion, standard deviation & variance. Hypothesis testing (two parameters): comparing two means (dependent or independent samples), and proportions.

Correlation and regression: linear correlation, linear regression. Applications of Chi square: multinomial experiments, contingency tables. Analysis of variance. Use of technology such as TI 83 or 84 is strongly recommended and introduced throughout this course.

  3. Understand and apply statistical and probability concepts.

  4. Develop greater confidence in their mathematical abilities.

 

Prerequisite: Acceptable level of skill demonstrated in the Mathematics Placement Process or Math 125.
